Gertrude Guarino

Gertrude "Trudy" Guarino, 85, of Goshen, died Wednesday, November 1, 2017 at Orange Regional Medical Center, Middletown, NY. Gertrude was born May 19, 1932 in Goshen, NY, the daughter of Kurt and Rose (Emerich) Schwalbe. She graduated from Monroe Woodbury High School and retired from Orange County Dept. of Social Services, Goshen, NY as a Social Welfare Examiner. She was a member of the Orange County Arboretum Society, volunteered at the Goshen Library and worked at the Election Board-Goshen, NY.She had a great love and commitment to her family; her grandchildren being her greatest joy. She was a wonderful friend to all who knew her, and most importantly, she never forgot to practice acts of kindness to others She loved to travel, had a talent for painting and pottery, enjoyed a good laugh and loved a good Margarita! She is survived by her children, Pamela Lewis of North Carolina, Doretta Ippolito and husband Daniel of Belleville, NJ, Alfred Merenda, Jr. and wife Veronika of Newburgh, NY, and Alicia Merenda-Holt and Glen Holt of Goshen, NY; brother, Curt Schwalbe of Constantia, NY; eight grandchildren, Ashley Lewis, Christine Sardo, Daniel Ippolito, Jenna Ippolito, Derek Holt, Kierstin Holt, Victor Merenda and Nadya Merenda; great granddaughter, Chloe Ledford and several nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her grandson, Mark Christopher Struhar and sister-in-law, Noreen Schwalbe. Visitation will be Monday, November 6 from 5 to 8 pm at the Donovan Funeral Home, Inc, 82 South Church Street, Goshen, NY. A Mass of Christian burial will be held 10:00 am on Tuesday, November 7, 2017 at St. John the Evangelist R.C. Church, 71 Murray Ave, Goshen. Burial will be private and at the convenience of the family. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Friends of the Orange County Arboretum, 211 Route 416, Montgomery, NY 12549 which will be used towards a tree planted in memory of Gertrude.
