EUGENE F. SMITH December 7, 2013 Goshen, NY Eugene F. Smith, of Goshen, NY entered into eternal rest on the anniversary of Pearl Harbor Day, Saturday, December 7, 2013 at Elant of Goshen. Eugene was born in Mt. Vernon, NY and moved to the Bronx as a young boy. He was predeceased by his parents, Anthony and Helen (Murphy) Smith; his wife, Muriel (Daly) Smith and his brothers, Louis, Fr. Gerard and Fr. Robert Smith. He is survived by his three sons: Robert McLean (Kerry), Douglas Smith (Marie) and Drew Smith (Debra). He is also survived by eight grandchildren, who were his pride and joy: Robert, Michael, Carolyn, Jullian, Emily, Julia, Tara and Matthew, as well as his sister, Mary Joan of South Carolina. A proud member of the Knights of Columbus, Eugene was a man of great faith who grew up in a family that included four priests of the Redemptorist Order. He was educated by the Ursuline Sisters of St. Angela Merici and the Irish Christian Brothers of Power Memorial High School. Upon graduation, Eugene enlisted in the United States Navy. He proudly served his country in the Pacific territories of Guam, New Guinea and the Philippine Islands as a member of the "Fighting SeaBees". As a member of the "Greatest Generation", his 3 greatest devotions were to God, his country and his family. An ardent baseball fan, growing up in the Bronx, Gene eschewed rooting for the neighborhood team, instead, rooting for the NY Giants, later changing allegiances to the NY Mets upon their inception. He was a big fan of the NY Football Giants and the NY Rangers, often regaling those around him with tales of admission to the Polo Grounds, Ebbets Field, Yankee Stadium and the 'old' Madison Square Garden, all for a quarter on his G.O. card. Visitation will be Wednesday, December 11 from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. at Donovan Funeral Home, Inc, 82 South Church Street, Goshen, NY. A Funeral Mass will be celebrated 10 a.m. on Thursday, December 12 at St. John the Evangelist R.C. Church, 71 Murray Ave, Goshen, NY.
