Ethel "Essie" Doody: A Life of Unconditional Love
With heavy hearts, we announce the passing of Ethel "Essie" Doody, 81 of Goshen, a beloved mother, Nanny, sister, aunt, and friend, who passed away peacefully surrounded by her loving family on August 30, 2025. Essie's gentle spirit and boundless love touched everyone she met, and her memory will be cherished forever.
Born on March 28, 1944, in Monsey, NY, to the late Gladys and Charles Ackerson, Essie grew up to be a woman of remarkable dedication and kindness. Her professional life began at Avon Products in Suffern, where she worked for 36 years. Her unwavering work ethic and determination were a testament to her character and a legacy she passed down to her children. She was also a lifetime member of the Tallman Fire Department Ladies Auxiliary.
Essie’s true joy and purpose, however, were found in her family. She was the loving wife of the late Bernard (Bernie) Doody, the love of her life. She found immense happiness in every moment spent with her loved ones, especially her grandchildren. A true sports enthusiast, Essie was her grandchildren’s biggest fan, always found on the sidelines cheering them on with immense pride and supporting all of them no matter what the occasion. Her love extended beyond her own family, as she selflessly helped friends and their children, earning her the title of "Nanny" to many who were fortunate enough to know her.
She is survived by her children Denise (Jason) Cross, Scott (Michelle) Doody, and Heather (Karel) Morse, as well as her cherished grandchildren, Brian Morse, Andrew Cross, Sean Doody, Brianna Morse, Meghan Doody, Kieran Doody, Kayla Cross, and Maeve Doody. She also leaves behind her sister Darlene (Steve) Rothaupt and brother Charles Ackerson, her sisters-in-law Maryann (Mike) Vanacore and Patricia McLaughlin, along with many nieces, nephews, and dear family friends.
Essie was predeceased by her beloved husband, Bernard; her grandson, Sean Patrick; her parents; her sister, Roberta Doremus; and several beloved siblings-in-law.
As we say goodbye to this extraordinary woman, let us remember the lessons of unconditional love she taught us, the laughter she inspired, and the warmth she gave so freely. Her amazing spirit, hard work, and loving nature were a beacon of light in all our lives. Rest in peace, dear sweet Essie (Nanny). You will be forever missed and never forgotten.
In lieu of flowers donations can be made to ALS United Greater New York, in her name Nanny's Gladiators and Warriors.
Her family would like to extend their heartfelt thanks to Dr. Harms and his team at Columbia for their guidance, and to the nurses at United Hospice.
